Recording Flora & Fauna is a meaningful way to contribute to the recognition and protection of the unique elements of our landscape and environments. 90% of land is held privately, so recordings on private land are necessary to increase the understanding of a region and the species which migrate through it.

Government data sets are predominantly taken from surveys on public land and project proponents use these data sets and smaller surveys they conduct in their applications. Your observations can infill these isolated surveys providing a broader and more extensive context which can be used for consultation submissions and your own future reference to measure biodiversity and quantify the environmental contribution of private landholders.

Researchers use iNaturalist for their particular areas of interest and can use the platform to scan recordings across Australia. You can choose to obscure or make observations private if you don’t want to reveal the precise location.
